I was goofing around on the net last night and a weird thought crossed my mind to see if one of the very first domains I purchased and developed (as an adult site no less) were available... Now the name bufurd is fairly short and I figured a squatter would have it, but lo and behold it was available and the archive of the original site still existed in the wayback machine.
A little background on the site: It was originally conceived to be a white trash, adult oriented knock off of The Spot, which at the time was a fairly popular web based soap opera. The concept was that there was this garbage man from Tightwad Junction (losely based upon the real life town of Tightwad Missouri) who would go through the trash he picked up and look for his friend's and neighbor's dirty laundry. Bufurd would sit down from time to time on his trusty TRS-80 (in reality a 486 running Front Page) and post the trash he had found as well as a running dialog on the trials and tribulations of being a garbage man in a small ozark shithole.
The site holds up fairly well despite the limitations of the time. Bufurd was blogging before blogging was cool. The site 'won' several adult website awards. And was a pioneer is tricking people into clicking banner ads. (Yes, I was the idiot who 'invented' the transparent banner ad with gallery listings made to look like simple text links on the banner exchange partner sites).
Also of particular note was the paraody I did of the Heaven's Gate cult. After the cult offed themselves, out of morbid curiosity I went and looked at their site and some strange thoughts snapped and made me think it was a good idea to do a Bufurd parody. The paraody was made using the actual pages from the cult, and if you right click to view the source of the pages here, you can still see the meta tags and other disturbing terms that the original cult used to spam the search engines. While preparing the pages for this iteration of the site, it was very strange not only to be working on files and graphics that had been originally created by people long removed from this earth with no nuts, but to read the source of the files for the very first time and see the kinds of things these people believed. (The original Heaven's Gate site still exists)
So I present here the complete original Bufurds Garbage Dump. Think of it as a museum piece - every line of code, every Front Page bot, every affiliate and link is presented as it originally was displayed. Internal links work of course but as for the links - I would assume many of these places have also assumed their spot in the great website graveyard.
Come with me dear reader to the year 1997 when I was just a young lad of 27 with no bald spot or gray hair, the internet was in its infancy, domains cost $50, hosting was over $65 per month, affordable broadband was but a glimmer in a young girl's eye and Ajax was a cleaner your Grandma kept under the kitchen sink to because she was to cheap to buy Comet. (Oh and apparently looking at the 'trash' that was archived, women still had pubes)
